Shooting Stars...

This week I cut up some old painting placemats...

I cut several of the strips into rectangles that I then cut into stars...

My Kindergarten students are learning about line this week...

Each child chose a start shape from the pile at their table and glued them onto their paper...

We spent some time as a group looking at, talking about and practicing some different types of               lines...

I love how each one is so different and each picture is loaded with information about the creative and mental growth of the kids...

Next week the kids will be adding the colors of the rainbow ( color wheel ) using watercolors! I can't wait to see how they turn out! So excited!!!

  1. Love these - I have that exact stack of painted placemats! They are good for many uses, most recently leaves in a collage tree :)

    1. I love using my old placemats for projects! I used them for a background on a display once and my principal thought they were abstract paintings we created! We had a good laugh when I told her they were the painting placemats! :)

  2. What a great idea! I'm out on the 15th and need to leave a simple project for the substitute to follow. I'm thinking this might be an easy. I could pre-glue some stars on paper and then have the sub work with the Kinders on different types of lines. It would fall into place really easily with my current plans for Kindergarten. Thanks for the post!! I'll be watching for the rainbow colors to see what you do next!

    1. I found a similar idea on Pinterest and used it for inspiration! I have 30 minutes with my kids this year for art so we were able to watch a video clip on Youtube about different types of line(forget the name it's written in my plan book at school...) talked quickly about line types and drew them in the air, the kids completed a practice sheet I made up with 6-7 different types of lines on it ( they are one of my SGO groups this year so i'm using the paper for line assessment base-lines...) and then when they handed me that sheet they started their final piece. Next class we will watch the " Roy G Biv" song by They Might Be Giants on Youtube ( the kids really love that one!), go over painting procedures and paint rainbow colors over their lines. Whew! I'm exhausted talking about it! :)

    2. Whoops! Forgot to say the black lines are black Sharpie so we can paint over them!

    4. Yup! Sharpies are a staple supply in my art room... I explain to them what they are and why we are using them. They work great for outlining when you are going to be painting. I use oil pastel sometimes too but it tends to smear if the kids rub their hands across it and they rub it into the paintbrushes when they paint over it. They know that the Sharpies are special and we only use them for certain things. They know they can't free draw with them. I don't know what I would do without them! :)
