Shape Abstracts - 1st Grade

My first grades created these shape abstracts back in September.  This lesson focused on shape review, proper painting technique/procedures and following directions.

I instructed them on which shape to draw and how many.  Three circles, three triangles and two squares.  They placed them randomly on their paper, positioning them how ever they wished.

The kids traced their pencil lines in black oil pastel and painted them in with tempera cakes.  Everyone did a great job!

Here's hoping that Hurricane Sandy does not hit New Jersey in the way they are predicting! Not looking forward to days of no electric again this year for Halloween!  Lost power for four days this time last year in a freak blizzard that took down several the trees in the area!  I was supposed to be attending a workshop on STEM to STEAM on Mon and Tues but it has been postponed due to the impending weather.  Of course I got the notification right after I finished writing and putting together two full days of  lesson plans!!!  Instead of a nasty trick from Mother Nature, I am hoping for a Treat!  Be safe and good luck to all of you in the area!  :)

    1. Wow! It made the news all the way in New Zealand! Thanks for the well wishes! I am in the North Western part of the state but we are still going to get hit with torrential rain and horrible wind. I have already resigned myself to the fact that we are going to be losing our electric! I have been doing laundry. baking and charging all the electronics all day! looks like we may be making coffee and food over the fireplace coals again!

  4. We're getting worried about the storm too, in eastern NY. Predictions are not promising. I plan to survive on halloween candy when we lose power. Snickers and M&M peanuts for protein, and peppermint patties & 3 musketeers for low fat (that makes them health food, right?). God luck to all of us in Sandy's path!

  6. Mmmm... that sounds good to me! Made some baked goodies yesterday to have on hand. Finished bringing in wood and getting all the camping gear out we might need...campfire cookware for the fireplace, lanterns, etc... Put away and secured all my outside furniture and porch decorations, planters. Several of my neighbors still have all their Halloween/Fall decorations and porch furniture out. Guess I'll be watching them blow down the road tomorrow! Stay safe! :)

  7. These are really terrific. I really enjoy the way you can see the integrity of their marks and speed of their lines. Beautiful student work samples.

  8. Wondering how you fared in the storm. We were fine here - far enough north that it was actually rather mild, just some rain and wind but not even a power outage. still we are a lot of Halloween candy. By now we've all seen the horrific NJ and NYC images so hoping you are safe and intact. Please let us know.

  9. Just read this post yet again (you must think I'm a stalker). I wanted to mention, that my roommate at last spring's NAEA conference in NYC (blogger 'Art Project Girl') attended a STEM to STEAM keynote speech by someone from RISD (she is a RISD graduate and knew of and respected the presenter, who's name escapes me at the moment). Anyhow, she thought it was the BEST thing at the whole conference. Hopefully it will be rescheduled and you'll still have that opportunity.
